Diseases causing Anxiety

Anxiety disorder affects almost 23 million American adults. There are mainly five causes behind anxiety disorder; personality, brain chemicals, genetic underpinning, and life experiences. All the above diseases do not directly cause anxiety but because they affect a person's confidence to face the world they indirectly lead to anxiety disorders.

Anxiety as a symptom

  1. Akathisia : restlessness of arms and legs as a side effect of medicines used for the treatment of psychotic and neuroleptic.
  2. Alcohol Withdrawal: a group of symptoms one suffers after suddenly stopping the use of alcohol after a long period of intake.
  3. Alcoholism : A disease that includes alcohol craving and continued drinking despite repeated alcohol-related problems; symptoms include craving, impaired control, physical dependence, and increased tolerance.
  4. Alzheimer's disease: It is a progressive, incurable condition that destroys brain cells, gradually causing loss of intellectual abilities such as memory loss and changes in personality and behavior.
  5. Amphetamine abuse: an appetite suppressant, becoming physically and mentally dependant on this drug.
  6. Angina Pectoris: a recurring chest pain or discomfort because of less blood flow to some parts of the heart.
  7. Anxiety attack: It is a sudden and acute episode of anxiety and panic.
  8. Baby blues : feelings of depression, anger, anxiety and guilt lasting for several days after baby birth.
  9. Benign Fasciculation Syndrome : a disorder characterized by fasciculation of various voluntary muscles in the body.
  10. Borderline Personality Disorder : a personality disorder in which a person presents instability in their perceptions of themselves.
  11. Cushing's syndrome : A disorder caused by excessive secretion of the adrenal gland hormone cortisol.
  12. Delirium : a mental state of violent mental disturbance.
  13. Depression : A mental state of pessimistic sense of inadequacy, lack of activity.
  14. Ecstasy abuse : A type of drug called Ecstasy abused to feel high.
  15. Emotional disorders : Any mental disorder in which a major disturbance of emotions is predominant.
  16. Fibromyalgia : A chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points that occurs in precise, restricted areas of the body.
  17. Heart attack : damage to the heart muscles due to inadequate blood supply.
  18. Marijuana abuse : being physically and mentally dependant on marijuana.
  19. Menopause : Cessation of women's menstrual period.
  20. Mountain sickness : vomiting and shortness of breath experienced by mountain climbers above ten thousand feet
  21. Nymphomania : abnormally extreme sexual desire in women
  22. Obstructive sleep apnea : It causes people to stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep because of temporary, partial or complete block in the airway.
  23. Pheochromocytoma : A tumor of the adrenal gland that causes it to produce too much adrenaline.
  24. Porphyria : As mentioned above.
  25. Postpartum depression : a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that occur in a mother after giving birth.
  26. Premenstrual syndrome : disorder characterized by a set of hormonal changes that generate disruptive symptoms in women prior to their monthly periods.
  27. Puberty : a sequence of events by which a child becomes a young adult; characterized by secretions of hormones, development of secondary sexual personality, reproductive functions, and growth surge.
  28. Pulmonary edema : an abnormal upsurge of fluid in the lungs resulting in swelling.
  29. Pulmonary embolism : a blood clot in the open cavity of a pulmonary artery, causing a severe dysfunction in respiratory function.
  30. Shock: the feeling of agony and mistrust that you have when something bad happens accidentally.
  31. Sinus node disease : Heart rhythm disorder due to the sinus node in the heart
  32. Sleep apnea : pause of breathing that occurs during sleep.
  33. Specific phobias : unreasonable and devastating fears of a particular thing.
  34. Stress: A condition in which a physical or mental event threatens the mental stability.
  35. Subacute Thyroiditis : Inflammatory condition of the thyroid of unclear origin.
  36. Tetanus: a disease caused by the bacteria Clostridium tetani that produces painful, rigid muscle contractions, especially in the neck and jaw.
  37. Toxic Shock Syndrome : a potentially fatal response by the body to a bacterial matter called a toxin.
  38. Xenophobia : fear or aversion of strangers or the unknown.

All these above mentioned diseases are directly linked with anxiety as anxiety is one of their symptoms.

There are certain diseases which are closely related to anxiety disorder and can be considered as an underlying cause of Anxiety;

  1. Ischaemic Heart Disease : reduced blood supply to the heart
  2. Anaemia: A shortage of red blood cells.
  3. Malignant Infiltration: A test of certain body parts for cancer and pathological purposes.
  4. Hypoglycaemia : Low blood sugar levels, causing uncertainty, light headedness and bad temper.
  5. Hypoxia: shortage of oxygen in the tissues .
  6. Hyperkalaemia: an elevated blood level of the electrolyte potassium.
  7. Hypocapnia: a state in which the level of carbon dioxide in the blood is lower than normal.
  8. CNS Disorder: diseases associated with Central nervous system.
  9. Vertigo: sense of spinning head or feeling of disequilibrium.
  10. Thyrotoxicosis : increased activity of the thyroid gland .
  11. Hypercapnia: A higher P02 level in the blood which is not normal.
  12. Hyponatraemia: a less than normal concentration of sodium in the blood .
At times, when there is no problem with our life experiences or in our genes, we try to figure out why we are suffering from anxiety disorder or panic disorder. In such a situation the best way out is a proper and a thorough check up by the doctor. This would help us not only in knowing the real underlying cause of our anxiety but would also make our treatment of anxiety and panic disorder easy.
